Purpose Built EVs
Kia, the highly acclaimed South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer, is all set to make a grand comeback to the CES event after a five-year hiatus with some big plans. The company is preparing to showcase its latest Purpose-Built Vehicle (PBV) lineup and business strategy, which revolves around sustainable mobility solutions.
At the 2024 CES event, Kia is expected to feature five different purpose-built electric vehicles (EVs), including a debut model that is scheduled for mass production in 2025. The PBV lineup will consist of three medium, one large, and one small PBV, with the small version being the first to be unveiled at the CES event next month, starting on January 9 (2024).
Kia is committed to making purpose-built EVs a significant part of its core business as it moves towards becoming one of the leading sustainable mobility solution providers. The company intends to expand its business into e-commerce, logistics, shuttle, and robot delivery with purpose-built EVs.
The growth in car-sharing and delivery has increased the demand for eco-friendly solutions, and Kia aims to contribute to the transition, especially with most developed countries moving towards stricter environmental regulations. To further this vision, the automaker began construction on its first Purpose-Built Vehicle factory, also its first dedicated EV plant in South Korea in April, with an investment of approximately $758 million or 1 trillion won. The factory’s mass production is expected to start in the second half of 2025.
Kia plans to manufacture 150,000 units in the first year, with the potential to expand the production line “in line with future market conditions.” The company has previously announced that its first PBV would be based on a new “eS” platform dedicated to purpose-built EVs. Kia’s first purpose-built vehicle was designed for delivery, ride-hailing, and B2B. Following that, it will introduce a larger version for fresh-food delivery, logistics, shuttles, mobile offices, and more.
Kia’s Purpose-Built Vehicle lineup and business strategy are aimed at providing eco-friendly and sustainable mobility solutions to the world, with the company’s goal of becoming a leader in the field of sustainable mobility. The new PBV lineup is expected to offer a range of EV solutions for various industries, contributing to a greener future.
